The Opposition is silent on the Impeachment. They wish to express their opinion at the Parliamentary Select Committee to be set up on Nov. 6th

Everyone is asking, where is the Opposition UNP on this impeachment issue, where do they stand? And what are they doing about it? Remember the UNP has already been at the butt end of politically motivated decisions by the Judiciary against the Party, more as a witch hunt against it. So how can they now defend the Judiciary when it changed colors for one decision? “AND ONE DECISION ONLY”. Who knows that this could be a deliberate attempt by the Govt. to get the UNP to oppose the Impeachment as a gut reaction, and then back off, and then force Shirani to toe the line! Now that would be something wont it?

Remember only in Sri Lanka is TRUTH STRANGER THAN FICTION. We cannot even make up the stories that are real in this country. No wonder the political shenanigans are enough entertainment to keep the people all busy and intense! Sadly it is at the expense of the Citizens who daily have to accept a loss of rights and freedoms we have so long taken for granted and cherish.

After all if they defend the Judiciary, the Impeachment does not go ahead, and the next decision is against Freedom, Democracy and Justice, then the UNP will be complicit in the decision having defended the CJ from Impeachment. They are caught in the classic catch 22 situation. How do they get out of that?

I am sure the Leader of the Opposition is drafting his own response to be made at the Parliamentary Select Committee, at which he will insist the Chairman be from the Opposition as one who has NOT signed the motion. After all how can one appoint a signatory to the Impeachment into the PSC, it would be biased from the start. Just think about the constituent members of the PSC. It is this membership that the Opposition UNP MUST fight for.

Just as the UNP were flayed in public for lack of a firm stand on the JSC secretary’s beating, it is a similar stand that the UNP are taking on this, as they know already that the Judiciary is not independent. It is therefore best for a responsible opposition to be able to get into the PSC, dominate it, make recommendations and then force the Govt’s hand, to have checks and balances to ensure the Independence of the Judiciary, rather than just oppose the impeachment, lose and then have a yes man as the new CJ until he turns!
