It was reported that life in some predominantly Muslim Towns in the Digamadulla District were brought to a standstill ( shops closed, offices closed, transport stopped, children were NOT sent to schools, few decided to venture outside) with a full scale Hartal being declared!
While this article said that the Mosques Federation had officially urged the public NOT to engage in this hartal, the people have decided to take it among themselves to show solidarity with their brethren who have been affected in the trouble spots of Digana, Teldeniya and so on.
Muslims usually do not defy the Mosque edicts, and so this is merely smoke and mirrors eyewash that is seen as being extremely disingenuous, and merely a fact of official disapproval, while being unofficially sanctioned. Pray someone tell me I am wrong here!
THINK ABOUT THIS ACT VERY CAREFULLY and the message it gives to the Sinhala Fundamentalists, who just as anathema as are Muslim Fundamentalists!
The predominant grievance of the Sinhala people backing the Mahinda Rajapakse racist ideology is that the Government is pandering to Muslim Fundamentalism, which they see merely in outward show of garb and behavior, and giving into their demands, while not rejecting Muslim or any other law, in favor of JUST ONE LAW for the Sri Lankans who live in Sri Lanka.
They cite the fact that Buddhism cannot be even practiced in their rooms, by Sri Lankan maids in Saudi Arabia as ALL other religions are banned there (correct me if I am wrong please) Using this example and also the fact that in the past Muslims were colorful saris only covering their heads, and wearing normal sarongs, they have over the past 30 years seen a rise of Arab Garb for men and women, increase as a sign of Muslim assertiveness of their rights.
This is evidenced by the fact that the towns involved in the Hartal, cannot be recognized anymore as Sri Lankan towns, as Dubai is more Sri Lankan than Akkaraipattu, which could be more like Saudi!
So it is actions such as these, that inflame a normally very passive lazy people, the Sinhala race, who accept Muslims in their midst as almost EVERY town in Sri Lanka has muslim shops, which obviously imply that they are accepted as an integral part of the community by the Majority Community, which is at the heart of the rise in prejudice, leading to the spread of gossip and misinformation like WANDA PETHI that arouse a the passions of the passive, to make their blood boil with bull shit.
While I am not denying that the Sri Lanka Police are racist, by standing still in not saving the loss of life and property of Digana and elsewhere where MOBS were plundering in plain sight of the security forces, and so SOME ONE MUST lay the blame on the Police for NOT acting, as it looks as if the Government is sanctioning this violence, that is NOT the way to react against by a hartal.
A hartal is further evidence of the power of Muslim in Sri Lanka, which this Sinhala Majority, Minority complex is trying to fester, and so it is adding fuel to the fire instead of stoking it.
ALL muslims I know subscribe to the fact that the Sinhala people harbor this racist thread stoked by the MR faction of Politicians, mainly due to envy and jealousy of a successful community, and get their pleasure by attacking their wealth out of pettiness.
It is as well to remember that most minority communities in all countries, other than the Blacks in the USA are more successful economically than the host community, due to necessity and they band together to help each other in business or life, and is NORMAL.
I wholeheartedly agree the problem is with the lack of foresight of idiots, easily led by firebrands like Mahinda and his ilk, in the Sinhala community, that should be curbed, and who need to be reigned in. However the idiots do exist in the Tri Forces, the Police and Parliament in the same proportions as exist in the community and that is a fact.
How we deal with this should be the national debate at the highest level, to ensure all communities are treated fairly in a UNITED SRI LANKA.
I have my personal opinion, where we separate religion, and designate, Sri Lanka a multi ethnic, multi religious country,. We should then have three languages, Sinhala, Tamil and English all taught in Schools as compulsory. We MUST have ONLY one law that applies to all. There must be freedom to practice you faith or declare yourself aethist or agnostic if you so wish.
The most important point is the building of a Sri Lankan identity, which supersedes one's beliefs, which should be PRIVATE.
You will have noticed that I have NOT mentioned Buddhism anywhere in this debate here. Why? In my opinion, there are hardly any Buddhists in Sri Lanka, who practice Theravada Buddhism, who come close to it. There is hardly any of the Buddhist Clergy who live by the tenets of Theravada Buddhism, but preach a form of incendiary ideology called Sinhala Buddhism which does not really exist or should NOT exist.
Buddhism is not the exclusive preserve of Sinhala people as the Tamil Kings of Sri Lanka also practiced a form of Buddhism too. So when gene testing is common we will all realize that NO ONE is from any pure race and we are all mixed, and the only common denominator is our MIX all of us who live in Sri Lanka. Religion is what we happen to believe today, and it may change tomorrow, as that is not the same from the beginning of time.
I know the skeptics will say it will never happen, but trust me when gene testing becomes common, the people who will get the most shock will be the Sinhala Buddhists, as they will discover their heritage is Hindu and Muslim and Muslims, who don't care what their race actually is, will have as many rights in this Country as they may have longer ties to Sri Lanka than many Sinhala people who came from Indian stock more recently than the Muslim population.
In Conclusion, you can see from this essay that I do not want to get into who did what to incite this latest Sinhala Muslim clash, as it is a futile exercise for political advantage and greed, I merely want to alert the Muslim people to behave responsibly in the context of the Hartal reaction, to prevent further adverse repercussions, and see who they can come to the table with a response to how they may be able to change the prejudices of the host community, which is all that is needed to pacify this normally very passive, foolish, lazy Sinhala folk in the land of the lotus eaters.
If they had their way they would prefer to eat lotuses, and anyone spoiling this lotus eating mentality, upsets their mental equilibrium, bringing them to the boil every 20 years to start a senseless riot and take the country back a few decades.
Any thoughts to the contrary would be welcome, as it is meant NOT to pick on any community, just to learn to build a national Identity of Sri Lankan ness that is the ONLY way forward to benefit from the land that has been bequeathed to all, and preserve of no one person or group.
This false belief that is propagated by the buddhist clergy that it is a Buddhist Country, is not for anything, but to strengthen their hold on the people. This is completely anti-buddhist in thinking anyway. If more people keep to the Buddhist precepts Muslim will convert to Buddhism too, if they are able to choose, and are not dictated by the same ideology following he herd that Buddhists are currently engaged in.
ReplyDeleteOnce people understand that the only means by which to further a religion is by living by its tenets, or at least egging the faithful to be more mindful of them in their lives, then we can understand that what we do is truly by religious teachings, or by being led astray by people who pretend to be Buddhists of Muslim, only then will we live in harmony with our neighbors. Lets wish that for Sri Lanka yet again.
ReplyDeleteHow ironic isnt it both communities are pointing fingers at each other, with none admitting their faults! Why? because the religious leaders/ political leaders want to hold on to their flock, not to say what is right to their people, when they do wrong.
ReplyDeleteLet someone come out and kill the canard tell the people the right way is to keep religion at home and behave as one Nation, only then will the true Sri Lankan identity emerge, where we enact policies for the benefit of the people, not a particular group which is asking for preference over the others.

Who are these hardlined, Buddhist groups accused of inciting and carrying out the latest violence? After all the people of Kandy say they have lived in harmony with Muslims and the violence is from people who have come from places outside, so who are they? It is time the Govt owns up if it is really organized or a spontaneous eruption. We are clutching at straws at present with rumor only.
ReplyDeleteWhy was the police just watching while rioters set fire to personal property?
Is the real answer, the govt does not know? Then something is seriously wrong with the Govt intelligence network. The Security Council is not doing their job, which is is to be well versed on all security threats within the Country.
The lame half hearted three days too late response form the IGP in sending out teams to Kandy, is too little too late. Should the army rather than the pro mob, less disciplined police take charge of security and arresting offenders?
All questions, no answers. the govt is fiddling about without even appointing a permanent minister of Law and Order, or is it Peace and Order?
IGP should be replaced for a start, immediately as he is known as a man of show, and little real capability to quell a riot, as it was so painfully obvious a few days ago, despite being warned of a tense situation.
